As we mentioned earlier, diets that are loaded with fats and refined carbohydrates can lead to problems with gut health. In addition, studies have suggested that appropriate consumption of daily fiber, following a low glycemic index diet, supplementation with vitamin D, omega-3, and probiotics may all improve your gut health. Other components of overall wellness, such as getting adequate sleep, reducing stress, and staying hydrated, may also help balance bacteria in your gut.

As we previously mentioned, the passing digestive problem or stomach ache is normal. However, when issues become persistent, chronic, or impact your day-to-day life, it’s time to see a physician. Scheduling an appointment with a gastroenterologist can help determine if your symptoms are due to an unhealthy gut or other factors, including potential medical conditions. In some cases, an elimination diet may be able to help you pinpoint any food triggers or sensitivities. From there, you can discuss treatment options, including medications, procedures, and more.
