Owen R. McLean, M.D.

Owen McLean, MD is a board-certified gastroenterologist at Birmingham Gastroenterology, providing expert digestive health care to patients across Central Alabama. He specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, helping patients improve their digestive health and overall well-being through personalized, patient-centered care.

Dr. McLean earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before obtaining his Doctor of Medicine from East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. During his training, he received honors in both the Department of Hematology/Oncology and the Department of Pathology.

He is an active member of several leading professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, where he served as a Delegate, as well as the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. McLean provides comprehensive digestive health services, including the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of conditions such as acid reflux (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver disease, and other gastrointestinal disorders. He performs and interprets advanced diagnostic testing and works closely with patients to develop individualized treatment plans focused on long-term digestive health, symptom relief, and disease prevention.

He also performs colonoscopy procedures and emphasizes the importance of colon cancer screening for early detection and prevention. By identifying and removing precancerous polyps, colonoscopy plays a critical role in preventing colon cancer before it develops. Dr. McLean works with patients to determine the appropriate timing for screening based on age, risk factors, and personal health history.

In addition, he has a special interest in capsule endoscopy, an advanced, minimally invasive diagnostic tool used to evaluate the small intestine and detect abnormalities that may not be visible with traditional endoscopic procedures.

Dr. McLean sees patients at the Homewood location and at UAB St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, providing convenient access to digestive health care for patients across the Over the Mountain communities, including Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia, and Hoover, as well as Greystone, Chelsea, Leeds, Meadowbrook, Inverness, Highland Lakes, and Moody.
