Carrie Rothermel, MD

Dr. Carrie Rothermel is a board-certified gastroenterologist providing comprehensive digestive health care to patients throughout Alabama, with clinics in Birmingham, Homewood, and Sylacauga. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh and received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Health System, followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Dr. Rothermel is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

She joined Birmingham Gastroenterology Associates in August 2022 and provides care for a wide range of digestive conditions including acid reflux (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver disease, esophageal disorders, abdominal pain, and colon cancer prevention and screening. She also performs hemorrhoid banding, a non-surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids.

Dr. Rothermel is one of the few female gastroenterologists in Birmingham and across Alabama, and is sought after by many patients looking for women’s gastrointestinal care. She is passionate about supporting women through conditions like IBS, GERD, pelvic floor dysfunction, and colorectal health, and is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive patient experience.

In 2024, Dr. Rothermel was honored as one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s Women to Watch, an award recognizing women who are emerging as key leaders in their fields and shaping the future of Birmingham.
