J. Stewart Herndon, MD
Dr. Stewart Herndon is a board-certified gastroenterologist dedicated to providing expert, patient-centered digestive care. A Birmingham native, Dr. Herndon graduated summa cum laude from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Biology before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he also completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine.
He completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he received advanced training in diagnosing and treating complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
Dr. Herndon is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians.
His clinical interests include the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of digestive diseases. He performs screening and diagnostic colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD) and evaluates a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including acid reflux (GERD), Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal disorders, swallowing disorders (dysphagia), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver disease, abdominal pain, hemorrhoids, constipation, diarrhea, and other digestive conditions. He is committed to delivering personalized care tailored to each patient’s needs.
Dr. Herndon cares for patients at Birmingham Gastroenterology’s Birmingham and Clanton locations, serving patients throughout Central Alabama.
