Swaroop Vitta, MD

Dr. Swaroop Vitta is a board-certified gastroenterologist providing comprehensive digestive health care to patients throughout Central Alabama. He specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the digestive system and performs screening and diagnostic colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD).

He evaluates and treats a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including acid reflux (GERD), swallowing disorders (dysphagia), eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), esophageal motility disorders, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver disease, celiac disease, constipation, diarrhea, and other digestive disorders. He also performs HemWell®, a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids.

A native of Hoover, Alabama, Dr. Vitta graduated magna cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College with a bachelor’s degree in economics before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, then returned to UAB to complete his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. Vitta is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society.

Dr. Vitta joined Birmingham Gastroenterology in August 2022 and is committed to providing personalized, evidence-based care to help patients achieve better digestive health and improve their quality of life.

He cares for patients at Birmingham Gastroenterology’s Homewood, downtown Birmingham (UAB St. Vincent’s campus), and Cullman locations, providing comprehensive digestive care to patients throughout Central Alabama.
