Michael J. Passarella, MD
Dr. Michael Passarella is a board-certified gastroenterologist providing comprehensive digestive health care to patients throughout Central Alabama.
Dr. Passarella provides comprehensive care for patients with a wide range of digestive and liver conditions. He performs screening and diagnostic colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD) and evaluates symptoms such as abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, constipation, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal bleeding. His clinical expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of acid reflux (GERD), Barrett’s esophagus, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, liver disease, hemorrhoids, and other disorders affecting the digestive system.
Dr. Passarella graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in Biology before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). After residency, he served as a VA Quality Scholar Fellow at the Birmingham VA Medical Center before completing his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UAB.
Following his training, Dr. Passarella practiced at the Birmingham VA Medical Center while serving in numerous leadership and academic roles at UAB. During his tenure, he served as Section Chief, Associate Professor, Division Quality Officer, Clinical Competency Committee member, and Program Evaluation Committee member.
Dr. Passarella is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Dr. Passarella joined Birmingham Gastroenterology in March 2022. His expertise has been recognized beyond the practice, including being featured in a UAB News article on protecting gut health during and after antibiotic use.
Dr. Passarella cares for patients at Birmingham Gastroenterology’s Homewood, UAB St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, and Alabaster locations, serving patients throughout the Birmingham, Alabaster, and surrounding communities.
