Michael T. Phillips, MD
Dr. Michael Phillips is a board-certified gastroenterologist providing comprehensive digestive health care. He specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of digestive diseases and performs screening and diagnostic colonoscopies and upper endoscopies (EGD). As an advanced endoscopist, he also performs endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to diagnose and treat complex disorders of the pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, and gastrointestinal tract. In addition, he offers HemWell®, a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for internal hemorrhoids.
Dr. Phillips graduated Cum Laude from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Russian. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine before completing his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama. He then completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Arkansas.
Before pursuing medicine, Dr. Phillips served six years in the Alabama Air National Guard, including one year of active duty. While serving as an airman in the United States Air Force, he worked in the intelligence field.
Dr. Phillips evaluates and treats a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including acid reflux / heartburn (GERD), Barrett’s esophagus, swallowing disorders, pancreatic and biliary diseases, gallbladder disease, colon polyps, hemorrhoids, gastrointestinal bleeding, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), liver disease, and other disorders of the digestive tract. He is committed to helping patients prevent disease, identify digestive conditions early, and develop personalized treatment plans that improve their long-term digestive health.
He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the Alabama Gastroenterological Society, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Phillips cares for patients at Birmingham Gastroenterology’s Homewood, downtown Birmingham, UAB St. Vincent’s One Nineteen in Greystone, and Pell City locations. He provides both routine digestive care and advanced endoscopic procedures to patients throughout Central Alabama.
